Leaning out to the world
(Guess what I shouted at the front of the ship)
To fall is human.
Lean back, Lean back
... y'all ... just like that.
Over the edge

Life Imitates Art
Which one is Mr. Matthew Matthew? (Duane Hanson's "Janitor")
Newsboys
The Funky Chicken
The little sculpture was doing the funky chicken, so I joined in.
Hans Hartung's "T55/4"
Yes, that's what he actually named it.
"Slit"
Modern Art gone lazy and awry.
By Wassily Kandinsky
Do you see the man? The dreams? The mountains? The war? The fence? The food?
Robert Gober's "Untitled"
This is one of the museum's most popular pieces and the one I get most excited about showing people. Yes, it is a suitcase on the floor.
Surprise!
Don't read this one if you plan on seeing it one day, because it will spoil the fun....
That suitecase on the floor is actually a portal to a grate in the floor and a tunnel down to a pond where a woman and a child play in the stream. You would never guess it was anything more than a suitcase on the floor of the art museum, until you stand over it and peer inside to see a whole other world. The skewing of expectations is such a thrill.
Tony Oursler's "Self Portrait in Yellow"
The doll with the chair on his head has the image of the artist's face projected onto it. We watch the video loop make intellectual observations and insights like "My dreams are often troublesome." and "I live in more than one dimension."
This portrait was painted in my likeness.
Magdalena Abakanowicz's "Two Figures on a Beam"
and Matthew.
Four lights casting shadows.
Matthew says he can draw this.
Falling Rocks Ahead.
Gerhard Richter's "Breath"
Jules Bastien-Lepage's "The Wood Gatherer"
also known as "Willie Nelson"
Jean-Leon Gerome's "The Two Majesties"
also known as "Mufasa"
Venice
Claude Monet
This one is about two stories tall.
We imagined it as an underwater scene at a coral reef, complete with snorkeler and various fish. Can you spot them?
Claude Monet's "Waterloo Bridge"
This is my favorite Monet. When I first saw it, I came around the corner at about a one foot distance from the painting and thought 'it's just a mash of colors.' Then I stepped back a few feet and gasped as the picture came into focus. Amazing how Monet couldn't really have seen more than an "impression" of what he was painting until he stepped back a few feet.
Ellsworth Kelly's "Red, Yellow, Blue II"
also known as "Ana, Dom, Matthew II"
and this is how I feel when females drive.
